Diarrhea in Children and Homeopathic Treatment

Diarrhea is a very common problem in children younger than age five.  It is usually mild and brief.  “Acute” diarrhea lasts less than 1 week.

It is a sudden increase in the number and looseness of stools (bowel movements). One or two loose stools is not diarrhea, and no treatment is needed.

Diarrhea is one of the important defenses of the body. It is the way that the body eliminate certain infective organisms. Although one can consider taking conventional drugs to suppress the diarrhea, they simply allow the bacteria or parasites to remain in the body longer.

The main danger of diarrhea is “dehydration”. The younger the child, the more quickly this can happen. If your baby is younger than 3 months, call your clinic for advice before beginning home treatment. If your child shows signs of dehydration call the doctor.

In case of breast feed infants, they normally pass five to six soft,or semi solid stools daily. This is quite normal and doesn’t considered as diarrhea.

Causes of Diarrhea in Children :

  • Bacteria such as E coli
  • Viruses such as rotavirus
  • Food allergies, such as with lactose products (milk or cheese) or soy protein
  • Contaminated food or food poisoning
  • Contaminated water
  • Medicines, such as laxatives, antacids, or antibiotics
  • Other infections such as an ear infection or urinary tract infection
  • Teething, during dentition child puts any objects in mouth to chew  and gets infected
  • Overeating of fruits and vegetables especially unripe fruits.
  • In bottle-fed infants, allergy to milk formulas
  • Children are more prone to diarrhea in hot summer weather.

Signs and Symptoms of Diarrhea :

  • Frequent stools, stool may be watery or with mucus or sometime bloody
  • Nausea & vomiting
  • Fever
  • Irritability
  • Gripping pain or colic
  • Loss of appetite
  • Symptoms of dehydration

As I mentioned earlier that diarrhea is not dangerous, it is dehydration which can be fatal to your child. It can be moderate or severe.

Signs of mild to moderate dehydration :

  • No urine for 8 hours
  • Dry lips
  • The inside of the mouth is dry or sticky
  • Child is irritable with very little energy

 Signs of severe dehydration :

  • No tears when crying
  • The inside of the mouth is very dry (no saliva)
  • Eyes seem sunken
  • Weight loss
  • Child is exhaust with no energy
  • Hard to awaken
  • Confused
  • Weakness (hard to sit up or walk, floppy)

Essential Care of Child at Home during Diarrhea :

  • Give plenty of fluid n water to your child
  • ORS should be immediately begun with the very first vomiting or loose stool. When ORS mixed with safe water and fed to the child, the ORS drink re-hydrates the body and supplies salt and other electrolytes in sufficient quantities.
  • If your child is breast-fed, continue the feeding. It will give sufficient amount of water to your child.
  • If your child is older than 2 years ,give light n easily digestive food if he/she asked like daliya, khichdi, oat meal etc.
  • Call your doctor as soon as possible or take your child to health care center

Homeopathic treatment of Diarrhea in Children:

In homeopathy, the treatment is based on the presenting symptoms of child like
  • Consistency and character of stool
  • Type of pain during diarrhea e.g. Pain before, during or after stool.
  • Presence of mucous or blood with stool
  • Child is thirsty or thirstless etc

Some homeopathic medicines used in diarrhea are : Ars alb, Podophyllum, Cuprum met, Camphor, Aloes, Veretrum alb etc.

Fever in Children and Homeopathic Treatment

Fever in Children and Homeopathic Treatment-Dr. Arunim Maheshwari

Definition of Fever :

The definition of fever varies based on the age of a child.
If your child is under 3 months, a fever is considered any temperature over 100.4°F (40°C).
Over 3 months, the definition is any temperature over 101°F (38.3°C).

When to take your child to the doctor :

Children with fevers are usually quieter and less active than usual.
Contact your doctor if :
  • Your child is looking more ill than before
  • Your child is more difficult to wake up
  • Your child has a rash
  • Your child has persistent vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Your child will not drink
  • A high fever persists even though you have given paracetamol or ibuprofen
  • Your child has pain
  • You are worried in any way.
  • All babies under 12 months with fever should be seen by a doctor.

Febrile convulsions:

In some children a sudden increase in body temperature can lead to seizures (or fits) which are called febrile convulsions. During a febrile convulsion, part or all of child's body may shake and twitch and child’s eyes may roll back in their head. Febrile convulsions can be frightening and can last for up to six minutes, but child is likely to make a full recovery. However, child may seem confused immediately after the convulsion ends, and should take him to see doctor or to local hospital.

Causes of Fever:

Fever is a symptom, not a disease. Fever helps the body fight infections by making its defense systems work more efficiently. Bacteria and viruses cannot live at higher temperatures and so are killed by fever.
Usually, fevers in children are caused by viral infections. The most common are colds, flu, and gastroenteritis, which are not dangerous.

Some other common causes of fever in children include the following:
  • Acute Otitis Media, Or Middle Ear Infection
  • Bacterial Meningitis
  • Childhood Immunizations, Such As The Dtp Vaccine
  • Heatstroke Or Heat Exhaustion
  • Pneumonia
  • Skin Infections
  • Throat Infection
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Overbundling Or Overdressing A Small Child

Essential Care of Child at Home During Fever :

  • Talk  to your baby about what is happening. The sound of your voice is comforting to them .
  • Be patient! Children who are sick can become more demanding and regress temporarily, sucking things, wetting the bed, and so on sometimes even before the symptoms of the illness (rashes, swollen glands etc.) appear. This will pass once they are on the way to recovery.
  • Keep your sick baby close to you. Many babies want to be carried constantly and sleep better if they are tucked up in bed with their mothers during this time.
  • Provide a calm environment for your feverish child.
  • Encourage your baby to drink plenty of fluids, preferably water, diluted natural juices, or at least sips of water at frequent intervals. If you are breastfeeding a sick baby continue to nurse as often as your baby asks.
  • Sponge your baby down with tap water if the fever goes above 103°F/104°F (40°C) and your child feels hot and sweaty. This will help the temperature to drop by 1-2°F and can be repeated as often as necessary. Sponging the face and forehead alone can also give relief.
  • Suppress the fever with Paracetamol in an emergency , that is, where the fever rises above 105°F (40.5°c), or if your child is in severe pain from, say, teething in the middle of the night or you don't have a homeopathic remedy to hand but never exceed the recommended dose.
  • Watch for signs of dehydration in infants under six months old, and especially in children who are refusing to drink or who are drinking less than usual.
  • Don’t encourage sick children to eat especially if they don't want to. Fasting encourages the body in its process of healing. Give babies who are hungry small, light, nutritious meals such as fruit or vegetable purees, soups and porridge/oatmeal.
  • Don’t give any form of aspirin to a feverish child. This has been known to lead to dangerous, which affects the brain and liver.

Role of Homeopathy in Fever :

Each baby has their own pattern of falling ill and will experience different fever symptoms. One baby will feel hot with a high fever, will kick off the covers; another will be irritable, intolerant of any disturbance and need to be kept warm; one baby will sweat profusely, be thirsty and slightly delirious; another will be dry and hot and refuse liquids.

Each of these babies will need a different homeopathic remedy to help them depending on their emotional state and general symptoms. Prescribe on the whole picture to help your baby fight their infection safely and effectively.

COMMON HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR FEVER :  Belladona, Gelsimium, Ferrum Phos., Chamomila, Ars alb, Bryonia, Rhus tox, Nux vomica etc.

The remedy is prescribed according to the presenting symptom of the child.

Child Health and Homeopathy - A Safe and Natural Way of Treatment

Child Health and Homeopathy -A Safe and Natural Way of Treatment-Dr. Arunim Maheshwari

Our children are our most treasured possessions. It is the natural wish of a parent that their child should have the best of everything, especially, health. As parents we are anxious that, when our children are ill, they should receive the best treatment.

Homeopathy can become one of the preferred methods of treatment especially for children. Excellent results were noted where in homeopathic medicines was given to treat various kinds of illnesses in children. Homeopathic medicine helps to boost the immune system & thus helps the individual to fight the disease. Because the dosages are so small, effective treatment can be achieved without dangerous side effects often associated with conventional medicine.

In fact, no ill effects would result from a bottle full of homeopathic tablets being swallowed, should a naturally curious child happen to open one.
Being pleasant-tasting and easy to take, homeopathy is an ideal form of treatment for children of all ages including small babies.

Moreover, homeopathy does not only help when your child is ill.  It can also help children who are angry, unhappy, frightened or traumatized, who have difficulty accepting change or who suffer symptoms during their natural growth and development (breastfeeding difficulties, colic, teething, weaning and digestion problems, nursery bugs, school and separation anxiety, exam stress, growing pains, hormonal difficulties and more).  Also, by seeing a professional homeopath regularly (once every few months), together we can often prevent life’s stresses from developing into more serious conditions.

Common Pediatric Problems Which  Can Treat By Homeopathy :

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Enuresis (Bed Wetting)
  • Nutritional deficiencies like vitamin deficiencies
  • Recurrent tonsillitis
  • Developmental problems like late learning in speech, walk, delayed dentition etc.
  • Behavior problems like ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), Pica (eating of non nutritive substances such as chalk, mud, plaster etc.), Temper tantrums etc.
  • Low Immunity problems e.g. easily get cold, cough, viral and other infections
  • Nervous problems e.g. Convulsions or epilepsy
  • Skin problems e.g. Atopic Dermatitis (skin rashes), Psoriasis etc.
  • Chronic problems e.g. Allergic sinusitis, Bronchitis, Old cough, Asthma etc.

What is Asthma? Treatment of Asthma by Homeopathic Medicines.

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic disease in which sufferers have repeated attacks of difficulty in breathing. It is an inflammatory disease of the airways of lungs. It makes breathing difficult and brings on attacks of coughing, wheezing, tightness in the chest and shortness of breath.
In recent decades there has been an increase in the number of people affected by asthma all over the world, especially in children.
Asthma is on the rise in the urban areas. It is not sure exactly why this is, but these factors may contribute:
We grow up as children with less exposure to infection than did our ancestors, which has made our immune systems more sensitive.
  • We spend more and more time indoors, where we are exposed to indoor such as dust and mold.
  • The air we breathe is more polluted than the air most of our ancestors breathed.
  • Our lifestyle has led to our getting less exercise and an epidemic of obesity. There is some evidence to suggest an association between obesity and asthma.

What happens in an “Asthmatic attack”?

To understand what happens in an asthmatic attack, it's helpful to visualise the basic structure of the airway tubes of the lung.
The main airway (windpipe, trachea) of the body is about 2 to 3cm across. It divides into its main branches (bronchi), which lead to the right and left lung. Each bronchus divides further, like the branches of a tree, to supply air to all parts of the lungs.
The smallest tubes (bronchioles) are only millimeters wide and they are made up of ring-shaped muscles that are capable of contracting or relaxing.
During an asthma episode or "attack," there are three main changes that stop air from moving easily through the airways:
  • The bands of muscle that surround the airways tighten and make the airways narrow. This tightening is called bronchospasm.
  • The lining of the airways becomes swollen. This is called inflammation.
  • The cells that line the airways produce more mucus, which is thicker than normal.
These three factors - bronchospasm, inflammation, and mucus production - makes it more difficult for the air to pass through (so making it harder to breathe) and also gives rise to the characteristic wheezy noise that a person makes when they have an asthma attack.

 Types of Asthma:

Allergic Asthma (Extrinsic Asthma): Allergic asthma is triggered by allergens like:
  • Pet Dander
  •  Food Preservatives
  • Mold
  •  Pollen

Allergic asthma is more likely to be seasonal because it often goes hand-in-hand with season allergies.
Non-Allergic Asthma (Intrinsic Asthma): Irritants in the air not related to allergies trigger this type of asthma. This includes:
  •  Burning Wood And Cigarette Smoke
  •  Air Pollution
  •  Air Fresheners
  • Household Cleaning Products
  • Perfumes

Cough-Variant Asthma (CVA): Cough-variant asthma doesn’t have classic asthma symptoms of wheezing and shortness of breath. CVA is characterized by a persistent, dry cough. Cough-variant asthma can lead to full-blown asthma that includes the other more common symptoms.
Exercise-Induced Asthma (EIA): Exercise-induced asthma affects people during or after physical activity. EIA can occur in people who are not sensitive to other asthma triggers such as dust, pollen, and pet dander.
Nocturnal Asthma: This type of asthma is characterized by asthma symptoms that worsen at night. Triggers such as heartburn, pet dander, and dust mites can cause bring on symptoms while sleeping.
Occupational Asthma: Occupational asthma is a type of asthma induced by triggers in the workplace. These include:
  • Dust
  • Dyes
  • Gases
  • Fumes
  • Animal Proteins
  • Rubber Latex
  • Coal
These irritants can exist in a wide range of industries including farming, textiles, woodworking, and many manufacturing companies.
Signs & Symptoms of Asthma:
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing (a hissing sound while breathing): It may be worse at night or early in morning. It can be made worse by cold air, exercise & heart burn.
  • Chest tightness or suffocation.
  • Cough ( dry or with sputum)
Warning symptoms:
  • Bluish Color To The Lips And Face, Called Cyanosis.
  • Severe Anxiety
  • Rapid Pulse
  • Excessive Sweating
  • Drowsiness Or Confusion
Causes of Asthma:
Although the cause of asthma is unknown, a number of things that can increase the chances of developing the condition have been identified. These include:
  • A family history of asthma or other related allergic conditions (known as atopic conditions) such as eczema, food allergy or hay fever.
  • Having bronchitis (a common childhood lung infection) as a child.
  • Childhood exposure to tobacco smoke, particularly if your mother also smoked during pregnancy.
  • Being born prematurely, especially if you needed a ventilator to support your breathing after birth.
  • Having a low birth weight as a result of restricted growth within the womb.

Asthma symptoms can have a range of triggers, such as:
  • Respiratory tract infections – particularly infections affecting the upper airways, such as colds and the flu
  • Allergens – including pollen, dust mites, animal fur or feathers
  • Airborne irritants – including cigarette smoke, chemical fumes and atmospheric pollution
  • Medicines – particularly the class of painkillers called non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which includes aspirin and ibuprofen, and beta-blockers sometimes given for high blood pressure or some types of heart disease
  • Emotions – including stress or laughing
  • Foods containing sulphites – naturally occurring substances found in some food and drinks, such as concentrated fruit juice, jam, prawns and many processed or pre-cooked meals
  • Weather conditions – including a sudden change in temperature, cold air, windy days, thunderstorms, poor air quality and hot, humid days
  • Indoor conditions – including mould or damp, house dust mites and chemicals in carpets and flooring materials
  • Exercise
  • Food allergies – including allergies to nuts or other food items

Treatment of Asthma:
In conventional method, the purpose of treatment is to manage the asthmatic attack. The medication is of two types:
  1.  Bronchodilators such as Salbutamol and Bricanyl.
  2. Anti-inflammatory steroids such as  BeclomethosoneI.

In short terms uses, they have minimal side effects but in long term uses there are many side effects like:
  • Mood swings or depressions
  • Flattened ‘moon’ face
  • Restlessness
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Heart burn & indigestion
  • Muscle weakness
  • Trembling or fidgety of limbs etc.

Homeopathic treatment:
Homeopathy is a system of medicine which tries to ‘cure’ this disease, instead of trying to provide symptomatic relief. While dealing with a case of asthma, a homeopath not only records the symptoms of the disease but also studies the medical history, family history, physical and psychological characteristics of a person. This helps to find the cause, the precipitating factors, and the hereditary tendency etc. Of special interest to a homeopath is the history of suppression of skin disease.
There are lots of medicines in homeopathy for asthma symptoms and it is not possible to list them all here.
Some of the common medicines are :
Aconite, Ars-alb, Ipecac, Lachesis, Pulsatilla, Spongia, Sulphur, Ignatia, Ant-tart, Hepar-sulph, Nat-sulph, Tuberculinum etc.

The selection of medicine varies from patient to patient.

Preventing Kidney Stone Recurrence

Nearly one in ten people has had a kidney stone, and every year, more than 300,000 people nationwide visit an emergency room for a kidney stone-related problem. Those who have had a kidney stone might be able to prevent another one from forming by drinking more fluids and making some dietary changes.

Increased fluid intake spread throughout the day can decrease stone recurrence by a least half with virtually no side effects.
People who already drink the recommended amount of liquids or for whom increased fluid intake is contraindicated should not increase their fluid intake.
The “recommended amount” of fluid intake for a person who has had a kidney stone is enough to produce at lest two liters of urine per day. If an increase in fluids does not reduce stone formation, one should start homeopathic medicines for kidney stones.
As for dietary changes, reduce foods known to increase oxalate in the urine, such as chocolate, beets, nuts, rhubarb, spinach, strawberries, tea and wheat bran; cutting down on dietary animal protein and purines (high-purine foods and drinks include beer, sugary soft drinks, fatty foods and others).
A kidney stone forms when tiny crystals in urine stick together. Studies show the recurrence rate of kidney stones within five years of an initial stone ranges from 35-50 percent without treatment.

What is homeopathy?

Dr. Arunim Maheshwari
What is homeopathy?
Homeopathy is an alternative method of treatment, based on the nature's law of Cure, namely 'Like Cures Like'. The truth of this law was discovered by a German scientist Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in 1796, and has been verified experimentally and clinically for 200 years. Homeopathy is the revolutionary, natural medical science. Homeopathy is gentle and effective system of medicine. The remedies are prepared from natural substances to precise standards and work by stimulating the body's own healing power.

Why should homeopathy be the choice of therapy?
Homeopathy is scientific, logical, safe, quick and extremely effective method of healing. It offers long lasting to permanent cure, treating the disease from its roots, for most of the ailments. Homeopathy is one of the most rational sciences with respect to its concepts of health, disease and cure. Homeopathy does not treat superficially by just driving away the symptoms but heals the patient from within. Undoubtedly, homeopathy is the medicine of future.

Homeopathy: Holistic Medicine:
The concept of disease in homeopathy is that disease is a total affection of mind and body, the disturbance of the whole organism. Individual organs are not the cause of illness but disturbance at the inner level (disturbance of the life force, the vital energy of the body) is the cause of illness. Therefore homeopathy does not believe in giving different medicines for different afflicted parts of body but rather give one single constitutional remedy, which will cover the disturbance of the whole person. Homeopathy treats the patient as a whole and not just the disease. Medical philosophy is coming more and more to the conclusion that the mere treatment of symptoms and organs can only help temporarily and that it is the healing power of the body as whole that has to be enhanced. Homeopathy believes in holistic, totalistic and individualistic approach.

Homeopathy: Magic of Minimum dose:
Homeopathy has a unique approach of the method of preparation of the drugs in which the end result will contain only the 'dynamic curative power' of the drug substance, devoid of any original crude substance. By a special mode of preparation called 'potentization', over 2500 homeopathic medicines are prepared from sources such as vegetables, animal, minerals, chemicals, etc. Hence homeopathic remedies with its ultra minute dose are non-toxic, absolutely harmless and bring about safe and sure cure. Homeopathic remedies are dynamic agents influencing body's energy.

Homeopathy: Ideal for Infants and Children:
Most of the children ailments like Cold, Cough, Fever, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Dysentery, Colic,Tonsillitis, Bronchitis, Asthma, Measles, Chickenpox, Mumps, Dentition problems, etc., could be very effectively and quickly treated with homeopathy without producing any side effects whatsoever. Unlike antibiotics and other such medicines, homeopathic pills do not hamper digestion, or lower body's resistance. Neither do they cause any allergies nor cause any damage even if taken over a long period. Children, willingly ingest homeopathic pills being sweet in taste. Indeed, homeopathy is child-friendly! Besides, homeopathy is effective also in temperament and behavioral problems seen commonly in children like irritability, obstinacy, temper-tantrums, fears, phobias, destructiveness; and thumb- sucking, nail biting, bed-wetting; as well as in mentally and physically backward children.

Homeopathy: Substitute to Antibiotics for many infections
Homeopathy is an effective alternate to antibiotics in many infectious diseases, producing no toxic side effects and bringing about rapid recovery. Homeopathy has treatment for many of the infectious disease such as Sinusitis, Tonsillitis, Bronchitis, Pneumonia, Meningitis, Otitis media (pus from ear), Gastroenteritis (vomiting-diarrhea), Dysentery, Urinary Infections, etc. Homeopathy, however, is not the best option for critical infections such as cerebral malaria, typhoid, acute tuberculosis, sever infection, etc.

Homeopathy offers wonder treatment for Viral infections:
Viral infections such as common cold, influenza, measles, chickenpox, mumps, viral hepatitis (jaundice), viral meningitis etc. are very well treated with homeopathy Allopathic system has no curative treatment for viral diseases except infusing antibiotics under the pretext of preventing secondary bacterial infection.

Homeopathy: Often avoids Surgery
Homeopathy is not against surgery. Surgery is an art and science by itself. Surgery is called forth in the conditions where medicines have limited or no role, and where surgical aid, operation can cure or improve the condition. There are number of diseases which are labeled as 'surgical', where homeopathy works curatively and can avoid surgery. Some such ailments are: Septic recurrent Tonsillitis, Piles, Fissure-in-ano, Fistula, Appendicitis (except gangrenous), Chronic ear discharge, Vocal cord nodules, Polyp in nose-ear, Kidney and Biliary (small) stones, small size Uterine Fibroid, Ovarian Cysts, Warts, Corns, etc.

Homeopathy: Answer to Allergic diseases
In modern life infections have diminished and various allergic disorders have grown rampant. Homeopathy offers very effective treatment in all allergic diseases such as various skin diseases like Urticaria, Eczema, Contact Dermatitis, as well as gives unbelievably miraculous results in Asthmatic Bronchitis.

Homeopathy: Excellent for Psychosomatic ailments
The psychosomatic disorders like Migraine, Asthma, Acidity, Peptic ulcer,Allergy, Ulcerative colitis, etc. are successfully treated with homeopathy. Homeopathy has long recognized the psychological origin of somatic (body) symptoms. Homeopathy always examines patient's mental make-up in all cases and remedies are given acting at the level of mind and body together, thus eradicating the disease.

Perhaps no other system of medicine has such a superb approach of tackling the mind-body disorders with definite therapeutic agents. Homeopathic remedies are capable of influencing the state of mind. They can specifically act to alleviate emotional disturbance such as excessive anxiety, irritability, insecurity, obsessive traits, undue jealousy, suspicion (paranoid) fears, depression, neurosis etc. By relieving the emotions such as above, homeopathic remedies bring about harmonious state of health. Thus homeopathy demonstrates the possibility of the highest goal of medicine, the therapy for the person rather than for the disease alone. Homeopathic remedies can treat mental and emotional disturbed states.

Homeopathic Opinion: A must...
In this scientific era of health consciousness, the time has come that for the treatment of any disease, which does not respond to any particular line of treatment, one must take a homeopathic opinion immediately. Often patients lose their early time going to one specialist to another helplessly, without permanent relief, and approach homeopathy only when other medicines fail.

Homeopathy: Not a last Resort
To obtain the best results and full benefits of homeopathic science, one should resort to homeopathy in the early phase of sickness. Because of ignorance and lack of awareness in general public about the usefulness of homeopathy in all kinds of diseases ranging from Cold to Cancer, many patients approach homeopathy late. By this time the disease process advances to an incurable stage and homeopathy can offer little then, to the otherwise curable disorders. However timely given homeopathic treatment could be a blessing to the ailing humanity.

Homeopathy: A near complete system of medicine:
Homeopathy is not limited to certain diseases but is universally applicable to all kinds of diseases. It is time, when people must be made fully aware of the benefits and the scope of homeopathy in various day-to-day diseases. Homeopathy should be more and more made available to the benefit of ailing persons, as it can positively help 90% of the diseases we have today.
